Today, I am going to share my opinion with a different style in this article. Normally, I used to share a contents which include information from vary topics. Who follow me up closely knows that these are green supply chain, logistics, procurement, professional life etc.

Our topic in today is solving a problem. Nevertheless, to reach out solving a problem, we have to define and to investigate assets on our hand etc. This is not my priority to talk to you regarding how we solve problem and informative content. It is just an thinking blog content…
How I Reach Deep Diver Mindset
I am the one who is working in Procurement and Logistics Department in energy industry. We as project execution team, are working create substations to distribute electricity. That’s the job which I have been doing. It makes me stay face to face with problems in substations directly even if I am working in an office.
Those issues provide me a chance to gain experience and vision frankly. That’s why sometimes I can wait and look at the big picture to understand problems and solve them accordingly.
As an example of a problem and investigate it directly…
As the procurement function worker, we are working as only contact point for many departments such as sourcing, management, finance, commissioning team, etc. Thus, any missing materials issue get to us. To work with different functions was my purpose at the beginning of my career because of believe that I am a such person to is responsive.
Let’s give an example and say 10 missing equipment exist. It should be 30 pieces. Is it really 10 missing item meaning? What is it mean that being deep diver while solving a problem here?
We have different situations here:
- 30 pieces needed, but 20 pieces supplied by the vendor.
- 30 pieces needed, but 10 pieces lost although vendor supplied correctly.
- 30 pieces demanded by engineering, but normally process has been done wrongly by site team and it was being done with 40 pieces. Engineering and site team are not matching each other.
- 30 pieces needed in site, but engineering sent the bill of quantity wrongly by calculating underestimated and 20 pieces has been ordered.
We can easily expand the situation to be determined. Moreover, those situation has been investigated deeply and being deep diver works here. We are supposed to find where the problem occurs exactly and which point is missing from each side.
In this point, the fundamental thing is visibility. I mean that we may find related information once we check documentation. Need to consider from purchase order to proof of delivery or any kind of system info’s.
I do not want to give detail about how the job works in that point, each system and each job have their own dynamic.
To cope with inscrutable problem related to problem solving have been defined by McKinsey “6 mutually reinforcing mindsets” as below.

As a consequence, problem solving is a vital ability of any professional. Thus, we have to be open mind while problem solving or staying face to face with undefined problems. It is obvious that professional life is calling who can be able to stay calm and approach problem with determination.
To take big picture from away and to investigate different scenarios whereby can show how you should proceed are both principal asset which can be haven.
